Children wearing over the counter mouthguards are TWICE as likely to suffer than those wearing custom-made mouthguards provided by their dentist.
According to the May/June 2014 edition of general dentistry news item published – “when it comes to buying a mouthguard, parents who want to reduce their child’s risk of a sports-related concussion /mouth trauma should visit a dentist instead of a sports shop”.

Mouthguard thickness has been shown to be a factor that contributes to the level of protection. The average thickness of the custom-made mouthguards in this study was 3.50 millimeters, while the average thickness of the over the counter mouthguards was only 1.65 millimeters.
