Early orthodontic treatment

Our Specialist Orthodontists agree that many children benefit from starting orthodontic treatment around age 7 when their adult teeth are developing. Early interventions can prevent the need for longer, more expensive treatments later in life.
Early treatment on the NHS isn’t available for children under the age of 10. We however are able to treat privately very specific cases of children from age 7.

The benefits of early orthodontic treatment for children

Around age 7, kids are developing and growing in their adult teeth. This is a great time to get them evaluated for orthodontic care. When you bring them in to an appointment, a Specialist Orthodontist will be able to assess their teeth, mouth, jaw and bite. They will note how your child’s mouth is developing and whether or not it needs help to reach optimum function. Children’s orthodontic treatments include techniques that help guide the growth of the jaw, allowing ample room for the adult teeth to continue growing in.

Signs a child may benefit from early orthodontic treatment:

  • Early loss of baby teeth
  • Late loss of baby teeth
  • Trouble chewing/biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb-sucking after age 5
  • Speech impediments
  • Protruding teeth
  • Malocclusion (bite abnormalities)
  • Crowded front or back teeth

Early treatment

Why start early?

Misalignments, malocclusions and dental trauma start at a young age when the adult teeth are first coming in. These issues only worsen as a child gets older. Orthodontic care used to only treat teenagers and adults, but now we are well equipped to work with children and their younger, more malleable jaws. Treating problems early when they are just beginning is easier and faster than treating the same problems ten years down the road. Early treatment may help to prevent the need for extractions, extensive orthodontic treatment and jaw surgeries later in life.

Early intervention orthodontic treatment may help with the following:

  • Ensuring ample room for growing adult teeth
  • Preserving space for teeth that have not come in yet
  • Supporting facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Reducing need for possible tooth extraction
  • Shortening overall treatment time needed
  • Lessening the overall cost of orthodontic treatment

What can I expect at my child’s appointment?

When you come in for your appointment, a Specialist Orthodontist will do an evaluation of your child’s mouth. We won’t necessarily recommend or begin any treatments (they may be doing just fine on their own!) but we will be able to formulate a plan that can be implemented in the coming years if we notice anything awry.

We love kids at Melton Orthodontics. Our staff is well-trained and experienced in working with young ones. We do our best to provide a family-centred, kid-friendly environment. You can expect your child to be treated with compassion and respect, and hopefully enjoy their experience at our office. Many of our young patients don’t want to leave!
