What is orthodontics?
Orthodontic treatment is used to straighten overcrowded, crooked or spaced teeth. Not only is it healthier for you to have straight teeth but they look nicer and you will smile with confidence.

And to protect your smile:
Which brace is right for me ?
This depends very much on the way your teeth are and how you want them to be.
Your teeth may stick out, are overcrowded or you may have gaps. Whatever your situation, we will advise
you at your first visit on the treatment that will suit you best.
How long will I have to wear a brace ?
We normally say between 12-24 months but again this depends on the treatment you need. We will be better able to advise of treatment time once we have seen you and discussed your treatment options.
Will I need to have teeth taken out ?
This is not always necessary and our practice will always avoid extractions where possible. If teeth need to be removed, your own dentist will do this for you.
Does it hurt having braces ?
Having
a brace fitted is not painful but when teeth
start to move they can feel tender. The
brace may rub a little at first and you
may get mouth ulcers. We give you lots of
advice on how to deal with these very temporary
problems.

Do I have to have metal braces?
If you are under 16 and a NHS patient and you need to wear a fixed brace, your brackets will be made of metal. But there are other options available privately should you wish. We use Radiance ™ brackets which are which are usually removable plastic braces. These must be worn to keep your teeth straight as they settle and firm into their new position. We recommend continued wear after this time just a few nights a week.

Will my teeth stay straight?
At the end of treatment we provide you with retainers which are usually removable plastic braces. These braces worn, normally for a year, keep your teeth straight as they settle and firm up in their new position. We recommend that after this time, you wear them at night a few times a week. If you don’t wear your retainers as instructed your teeth might not stay straight!
Can anything go wrong wearing braces?
Wearing braces is normally without complication but a few things should be mentioned.
It is most important to have excellent oral hygiene so that your teeth are clean and not at risk from decay. If left, plaque collects around the brackets of fixed braces and can lead to permanent staining and even decay. We recommend you use a fluoride mouthwash to minimise the risk and strengthen your teeth.
The roots of the teeth move during orthodontic treatment and a very insignificant shortening of the root naturally occurs. In very rare cases the roots shorten a lot and as a result some teeth may become loose following treatment. However as part of your first visit to see us, your orthodontist will use an x-ray to determine how healthy your teeth and gums are and will advise you accordingly.
Relapse is a problem that occurs when you do not wear your braces. Teeth that have been straightened need to be held in place and retainers are provided for this purpose. If you do not wear your retainers as recommended we cannot guarantee that your teeth will stay straight.
