Please see, on the right hand side, some of our most frequently asked questions relating to the need for braces, problems with braces and how to look after your braces on a daily basis:

Why should I have braces?

When left untreated, many minor orthodontic problems may become worse, contributing to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive gum stress on gum tissue, and misalignment of the jaw joints. This can all lead to chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck. Treatment by a specialist to correct minor orthodontic issues are often less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that can develop in later years.

What are the benefits of braces?

Braces, in the form of teeth straightening treatment, not only help you achieve a straighter smile, they can also promote improved overall health and wellbeing:

  • Straight and evenly spaced teeth are easier to keep clean, resulting in better oral health
  • Properly aligned teeth chew more efficiently, which may help digestion
  • Aligned teeth create a better bite, which may reduce stress, headaches, and strain on your supporting bone and tissue
  • According to the American Association of Orthodontists, crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This may contribute to conditions that cause not only tooth decay but may lead to gum disease and tooth loss

What do I do if I have a problem with my brace?

Although emergency orthodontic treatment is rarely required, there are occasions where you might experience problems with your brace. If something happens with your brace, please telephone the practice as we are always here to help and give the best advice on what you should do.

If you feel you need to be seen, we will make an appointment for you, however, if a bracket has become detached from your tooth (we refer to this as a breakage), we can normally sort this out at your next appointment. Always have some wax to hand to stop any rubbing or discomfort.

What can I do to prevent breakages of my brace?

Be careful what you eat:

  • Don't bite into hard foods like apples, raw carrots, pizza crusts and crusty breads. Cut or break them into small pieces and chew on your back teeth.
  • Don't eat sticky foods like toffees, chewing gum, etc.
  • Don't chew pens, pencils or finger nails!
